Would you trust a home made parachute…? (part two )
All four of us arrived out at the Cam hut expecting the food sacks to have dropped near the hut and hopefully reasonably intact….
Well yes, I guess near to the huts is a fairly accurate description….. infact one was…. welll let say a “bulls eye” .. yes folks the second drop managed to make it right to where myself the cook for this muster would stand to prepare meals….. straight through the roof…. missed the internal wooden framing and semi disintergrated upon contacting the hut floor..hmmmm
The other….. O DEAR….landed smack on top of the only large protruding rock in the middle of the creek running behind the hut…. what a mess.. half the contents had washed a way down said creek, although the sack remained… what was left of it attached to the rock..
You should have seen the bag of spuds…. now spud mince, mixed with bread and vege bits… every can of what ever in the sack had changed shape from a normal round longish cylinder shape to one of quite round like a ball…
Extracting what was left out of the creek I over hear Cashy say to Food Scoop.. this is going to be a interesting set of meals… I cant wait to see what the cook dishes up…
Well we were all here, so may as well get on and make the best of what we have,,,
Once unpacked the others had scrambled up onto the roof, and with a couple of tools already in the hut, had removed the ripped iron, and then removed one of the end wall sections of corrugated iron and repaired the roof and after straightening the existing roof piece and adding a make shift piece of old ply lying around in the hut, made a fairly good job of resurrecting things…
Mean while I got the hut fire going and popped a leg of mutton in the camp oven and placed it over the heat, but o dear… the spuds…. there was no way to remove the bits of skin from spud pulp, so when the mutton was half an hour from cooked placed a big pot of spud bit on to boil… some of the carrots in the bag that entered the hut wasnt in bad shape along with some cabbage etc, made what I thought was an ok meal but…..Cashy took one look at the spud bit and declared that it was unfit for his consumption…… Food scoop laughed saying “whimp” Cashy, I am so hungry that I could eat the whole darn pot full….Cashy right back at him dared a bet that he couldnt do so…. right O a $50 bet that I can…. OK said Cashy and they shook hands…. the bet was on…lol
It was so funny the rest of us had mutton and veges with gravy minus spud bits mean while Food Scoop set about with a spoon and his big pot of spuds…. after a while his stomach must have been very very full, so out the door he went complete with pot and spoon , sat down on the bench and carried on, but alas around almost half way he got to a stage that another spoon full would break the camels back so to speak, so he stopped…. Immediately Cashy was delighted… he thought he had just squeezed 50 bucks out of Food Scoop, and was holding his hand out but Food scoop is no fool….
He said the bet was….. to eat the whole pot full….. but there was no mention of any time frame in the bet….. you should have seen Cashys face drop….
Yes folks I dont know how but Food Scoop retired to bed early and all night kept the contents within…next morning he wasnt that interested in much breakfast at 4.30am before heading out on the hill to chase sheep, then tea time next night he sat down and by golly finished the whole pot lot…what a bloody hero I thought..lol
He had won the bet..!
The rest of the muster proceeded fairly well over the coming three days and on the fourth, we pack the hut up, doned our back packs and drove the whole mob of Merinos down country to the homestead yards, then over the next few days drafted them and sent the new various mobs out to their winter paddocks…
Now once this was complete Frank had organized a large party and invited musterers, farmers and friends from near and far to a brand new wool shed opening party.. the shed was a beauty.. two storied with the wool and shearing platform on the upper floor with housing for a large mob of sheep held on the lower floor…
People started arriving on mass.. there must have been 80 to a hundred there, and what a do….. we ran out of beer early hours of the first day so a call went out to Blenheim taxi company to pick up 8 to ten big kegs and bring them from town up to the station… later the following afternoon a second taxi load was ordered…
By this stage there were a lot of semi legless humans trying to out drink each other, one of such was Food Scoop, who was sitting up in the wool room on an easy chair, and next thing, he leaned back, and him and chair went straight over, crashing to the floor… Food scoop didnt move, causing great laughter from those around him…. Cashy…. seeing this staggered to his feet and woddled over to him kicking and abusing Food scoop but there was no response…. he kicked him again and food scoop just laughed but remained comatosed on the floor…Cashy feeling a bit disgruntled from losing his bet grabbed food scoops leg and dragged him across the floor and out onto the wool bale load out platform some two metres off the ground and pushed him straight over…..
Looking over the side, there still wasnt any movement from the drunken mate, so Cashy hatched a plan to get him back….
Sliding down the stairs Cashy went and untied all of Food Scoops dogs of which there was a couple of Dozen, tied them all together on one long chain,, hooked the other end of said chain through Food scoops trouser belt and let the dogs loose…
You should have been there to witness it…. the dogs tore off with this semi lifeless rag doll being dragged along the ground behind them…. hilarious……… I over heard Frank laughing as he said….. those boys like to play hard…. and rough…!
