Drone Photography…!

Here at Foalua Photography we have a number of different cameras that we use depending on where we are and what is desired to be photographed..

About 18 months ago, I happened to be talking to a friend who owned a DJI Mavic 3 pro drone and he uses this just as a recreational drone, taking the odd photo here and there …

He happened to show me one of his images of a high country scene taken around 50 metres up in the air, and that quality was very good, clear and sharp..

I asked him if I could have a copy to test its potential resolution for wide format printing of which I printed a draft copy..

The drone boasts 48 MP and an impressive f/2.8 aperture which is excellent for our mostly day time photography requirements..

With this information I did quite a bit of research on drone photography, and did find the DJI drone range quite appealing..

One draw back with the larger Mavic is it quite noisy while airborne, so looked hard at the features of its little brother the DJI mini4 pro, which posted that it to was able to produce imagery at 48 MP  and using a 1/1.3-inch sensor to process imagery with the added advantage of being very quiet…

So, with this information mulled over we decided to purchase the DJI mini4 pro ..

Since owning, and becoming familiar with flying it, I have to say it has opened up a whole new world with its ability to capture imagery, over water, up hill sides, overlook subject matter for the best angles..

We still use our large hand held camera with its tripod for most on land imagery, and when deciding on producing our multi shot panoramas, but the drone certainly has its place…

I see soon there is a new model due out .. the DJI MINI 5 Pro, that has enhanced camera features as well as a one inch sensor, so clarity should be further enhanced…I can see us purchasing a second drone in the near future…. 

Below is a small sample of a reconnaissance flight over the historic Breast hill wool shed , then out to the van in which we arrived the previous evening and spent the night on the side of the road for this days photoshoot..

Many thanks to the land owner for their permission the photograph this icon… incidentally, while we were onsite the owner called in with his helicopter, and we all enjoyed a yarn over a cuppa tea again on the side of the road..!
