This stable block was a very important part of the early Stage coach travel days, housing the tired horse teams that pulled the stage coach as it navigated the treacherous journeys from Christchurch to Westland and return ..
Housing up to six horses at a time under cover from the often torrential rains and weather they were fed hay, oats and chaff delivered to each stable via a shute from the above hay and feed loft..
