“Kiwi Trail”…! Canterbury, NZ
On our treks of two weeks or longer I often use a three horse rig, and I do this as every third day , one horse that perhaps may have been yesterdays pack or riding horse has a day off so to speak, with no load on them..
In my earlier days I used to run a back country horse trek guide service, and this at times was 3 to four months in length, riding the trail from one end of our South Island to the other, taking up to four other riders …
This photo today, we had based ourselves at a hut in the Lake Sumner area, of north Canterbury, and had taken a couple of riders up through the historic Kiwi Pack track and out to the Lewis pass area for a couple days side trip, but left the main pack boxes behind at the hut as in places on this Kiwi trail there are a number of narrow steep hill sides to endure, and these need constant fallen tree clearing on the track, so today on the pack horse I just took a “top load” of basic food items needed as well as my horses anti sandfly covers as this area is particularly bad for them..!
Pictured here, is Gizzy my riding horse of the day, leading Shae, with Bailey the pack horse following along behind having just left the Lewis pass end of the Kiwi pack track and following the Kiwi river valley down to the Kiwi hut..!
