These contract thrashing gangs used to travel from farm to farm thrashing, Wheat, Barley, and Oats etc, and would work 24 hours a day when the crop and weather was on their side..
Many of these units employed “any and all comers” looking for work, some fellas stayed ……others gone next day..
Considering most of the actual thrashing machine is made of wood, they certain stood the test of time..
The belt speed needed to remain fairly constant to get a good yield, as if the speed drops then the fan speed drops allowing too much grain seed to pass along the riddles and out the end, so it was a constant job all those hours for the engine fireman to feed the boiler just the right amount of coal.
It is also Ironical, that no Health and Safety rules were imposed by the boss….. get too close to fast spinning wheels or belts and its good luck to you..!
