Guess where..!

As one can imagine, the mountain country of the South Island and indeed NZ, is vast, and varied… the history is something that has fascinated me for a long time…

I have been in and around horses and horse travel in these regions most of my adult life and something I like to do is study topo and google maps in search of old horse pack tracks that once served the areas. these tracks back then often were the only access way to get supplies and materials to firstly build huts and then supply the food needs for deer cullers and farm workers..

Many of these tracks are only 30 cms wide on the sides of mountains and hills, with the hill on one side and a steep drop off away down to the creek in the bottom on the other … horses in time become use to these tracks and are happy to traverse with pack loads up hill to the top of the hill saddle and down the other side…. at times these areas are not for the faint hearted..!

Along some of these forgotten trails are equally forgotten huts, and this one pictured has certainly been left to fend for itself..!
