Years ago, when the railway line was used by steam engines there was a coal mine on the side of a hill above the Broken river, and this coal extracted was both used to power the trains, but also a pick up point for domestic and industrial use in Christchurch..
This, the only physical reminder of those days is the mine managers house, now used as a farm hut on Flock hill Station…
