All out today..!

“All out today”..! Southland, NZ

Mandy and I were shifting our photoshoot location from the Lumsden area over towards NightCaps in the Southland district this late afternoon when we past this historic old home..

We pulled up and were admiring this gem from the country roadside when along came an elderly gentleman driving an equally elderly ute.. he stopped and we introduced ourselves as photographers, interested in this subject..

Upon listening to this gentleman, he revealed that this house was built by his Grandfather as a young man and had lived until his death here, then inherited by this gentleman… interesting, about the time of this inheritance, the government Education Dept of the day had expressed interest in buying the property to be converted to a local school, which apparently happened..

Many years later school  children numbers declined in the district causing closure…. the house then sat in decline from then to today…!

Traveling on the road extensively as we do, in pursuit of interesting photographic subject matter, we love chatting with local folks … the stories that unfold are very very interesting and diverse indeed…!
