Western Red..!

On one of our Westland travels we had stopped for a few days in the Whataroa area, and one of the nights decided to have dinner at a local hotel..

It was during that visit that we got yarning to one or two of the locals , asking about old historic buildings and other interesting photo subject matter, when one said that he knew of an old abandoned homestead and outbuilding away up a river valley..

Upon asking direction he informed that to get to the area, there is first a 17 kilometre single lane bush road into the hills before eventually arriving down at a river… from there we were directed on foot up over a cliff side bush track and out upstream to a large flat where this homestead was sited..

Yes, it was a journey indeed, but alas we eventually arrived… Homestead…? I said to Mandy..? pointing to a hut made from local bush material, which looked as if it was built in the fifties or before, but yes,,, home it was..
